Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Centre invests US$900 million to a campus expansion project that will nearly double the hospital's size and revolutionise care delivery in Pennsylvania, USA.

Features:

The nearly US$900 million expansion and renovation project includes the construction of an 11-storey patient tower and aims to enhance the medical centre's capacity in emergency medicine, critical care, trauma care, surgical services, and advanced cardiovascular programmes.

The project spanning approximately 600,000 square feet, will elevate Geisinger Wyoming Valley's capabilities to match those of prominent academic medical centres in cities like Philadelphia and New York.

The project features:

• Converting all rooms in the medical centre to private accommodations
• Adding 58 new beds for medical/surgical inpatients
• Incorporating 22 additional emergency treatment rooms
• Establishing specialised emergency room areas for behavioural health patients
• Enhancing trauma care capabilities
• Introducing 24 new intensive care unit (ICU) beds
• Installing 6 new operating rooms
• Upgrading cardiac catheterisation labs dedicated to heart attack treatment and other procedures
• Introducing 2 new rooms for structural heart procedures such as valve treatments
• Expanding clinic areas and facilities for cardiac imaging

This expansion addresses a critical need at a pivotal time. By enhancing capacity in areas such as the ICU and medical/surgical units, the medical centre aims to expedite patient care, ensuring timely treatment and favourable outcomes upon discharge.

Furthermore, the project is anticipated to generate numerous job opportunities for nurses, physicians, advanced practise professionals, and support staff in diagnostic services.

The initial phase of construction, focused on the new bed tower and expanded ER, is projected for completion by 2028. Subsequent renovations across other sections of the medical centre will extend through 2030.
